The Taboola Advertorial + ClickFunnels 2.0 Playbook
Taboola readers cross two domains before they buy, and most funnels lose the click on the way. This playbook stitches ad, advertorial, and ClickFunnels 2.0 funnel into one tracked journey, then sends Taboola the full order value server-side.
Advertorial funnels print money and shred data. Taboola sends the reader to your advertorial on one domain; the CTA sends them to your ClickFunnels 2.0 funnel on another. Browsers scope first-party data to each domain on purpose, so the click that paid for the reader goes dark at the hop. Then the funnel itself hides half the revenue: buyers close the tab during the upsell flow, never reach a thank-you page, and nothing browser-side ever gets the chance to report the sale.
- The domain hop severs attribution. The click ID collected on the advertorial is invisible to the funnel’s domain, so orders land with no campaign attached.
- Upsell revenue never reports. A buyer who takes the one-time offer (OTO) and closes the tab looks identical to one who bounced, and your bumps and upsells vanish from the numbers.
- Taboola bids on the wrong number. It optimizes toward front-end clicks while your real average order value, with bumps and OTOs, stays a secret you keep from your own bidding.
This playbook closes all three gaps with one architecture: a property for each domain stitched by Cross-Domain Tracking, a webhook that tracks every funnel order server-side, and Combined Orders so Taboola receives one purchase carrying the full order value.
The Reader's Journey, From Native Ad to Full-Order Postback
Follow one reader from the Taboola click, across the domain hop, through the optin, order form, and OTO, to a single combined purchase reported back to the campaign that earned it.
Steps marked with the AnyTrack node run automatically. No extra code, no manual tagging.
Example Scenario
You sell a $47 posture course. Taboola drives readers to “Why Your Lower Back Hurts After 40” on thedailyposture.com, a content domain that keeps the editorial feel. Its CTA points to your ClickFunnels 2.0 funnel on posturemethod.com: optin page, sales page, order form with a $30 guided-routines bump, then a $97 one-click OTO. A good buyer is worth $174; Taboola only ever hears about $47 of it, when it hears anything at all.
Two different root domains is the whole point. The browser won’t carry identity across them, so the tracking has to. Three things need to happen:
- Taboola gets full-order postbacks, so conversion bidding learns from $174 buyers instead of front-end clicks.
- Optins feed signal between sales. Every
Leadreaches Taboola server-side, giving campaigns something to learn from while purchase volume builds. - Your Campaign Report ties Taboola campaigns to funnel revenue, attributed through the hop (Taboola spend stays in Taboola’s own dashboard).
Each domain is its own AnyTrack property with its own Tracking Tag, and that separation is what makes the two-domain funnel measurable:
| Configuration | Advertorial property | Funnel property |
|---|---|---|
| Domain | thedailyposture.com | posturemethod.com |
| Runs your ads | Yes, readers land here | No, checkout only |
| Tracking Tag | In the site <head> | In ClickFunnels Site Settings, Tracking Codes |
| ClickFunnels 2.0 integration | Not needed | Webhook installed, Combine Order on |
| Cross-Domain Tracking | Funnel domain added (posturemethod.com) | Off |
| Sync Conversions | Off, it receives the synced conversions | On, syncs orders back to the advertorial |
| Taboola | Pixel ID connected, Server-Side Events on | Optional |
The advertorial property is where Taboola lives, because that’s where your ads land. The funnel property collects the orders and syncs them back, so the campaign that paid for the click gets credited for the whole order.
- An AnyTrack account on Personal or above (the Taboola server-side integration requires it)
- Admin access to the advertorial site's code and to your ClickFunnels 2.0 workspace settings
- An active Taboola account and your Taboola Pixel ID
- Your funnel on its own root domain, separate from the advertorial domain
Step 1: Set Up a Property for Each Domain
Cross-domain tracking works between two AnyTrack properties, one per root domain.
- Create a property for the advertorial domain and paste the Tracking Tag before
</head>on its pages. - Create a property for the funnel domain and copy its Tracking Tag.
- In ClickFunnels, open Site & Blog → Site Settings → Tracking Codes, paste the Tag under Header Code, and save.
One paste covers the funnel
The Header Code applies to every funnel page under that site, so the optin, sales page, order form, and OTO pages are all collecting sessions from this single step.
Step 2: Install the ClickFunnels 2.0 Integration
The ClickFunnels 2.0 integration tracks orders where they actually happen, on the ClickFunnels server, so a buyer who never reaches the thank-you page still counts.
- In AnyTrack, open the Integration Catalog, search for ClickFunnels, and select ClickFunnels 2.0 (not the Classic version).
- Click Install Integration, name it, and copy the Webhook URL it generates.
- In ClickFunnels, go to Workspace Settings → Webhooks → Add new Webhook Endpoint and configure it: name it AnyTrack, paste the webhook URL, select the
contact.createdandorder.completedevent types, choose API Version V2, and scope it to All Funnels (or just this one). - Save the endpoint, then run a test optin and a test order through the funnel. Both should appear in your AnyTrack dashboard; if they don’t, the integration’s Events Log tab shows every incoming event and why it was accepted or rejected.
AnyTrack maps the webhook events to its standard conversions: contact.created arrives as a Lead, order.completed as a Purchase, and each subsequent one-click order as an Upsell.
Turn on Combine Order
In the integration settings, enable Combine Order. AnyTrack groups the front-end Purchase and every Upsell from the same session into one Combined Order and sends it as a single purchase with the total value.
Without Combine Order, a $47 sale followed by a $97 OTO reaches your ad platform as two purchases, which inflates conversion counts and understates AOV. With it, Taboola sees one $174 buyer, which is what it should be bidding toward. The window is fixed: purchase events arriving within 10 minutes of the first one join the same order.
Step 3: Connect the Domains
This is the step that carries the click across the hop.
- In the advertorial property, open Property Settings → Cross-Domain Tracking, add the funnel’s root domain (posturemethod.com), and save.
- In the funnel property, open the same settings and toggle Sync Conversions.
- In the advertorial property’s cross-domain settings, check that the Event Names list includes the events your funnel produces:
Purchase,Lead, andUpsell.
From now on, every advertorial link pointing at the funnel is AutoTagged with the click ID at click time, and funnel conversions flow back to the advertorial property, where Taboola is connected.
Add only the destination domain
Never add a property’s own domain to its cross-domain settings: self-referral traffic corrupts tracking. To verify, hover the advertorial CTA and look for the atclid or atrefid parameter (use an incognito window if it doesn’t show).
Step 4: Connect Taboola
Taboola connects on the advertorial property, where your ads land.
- Open Tracking Pixels, select Taboola, add your Taboola Pixel ID, and toggle Server-Side Events. AnyTrack loads the Taboola Pixel for you: engagement events sync client-side, conversions return server-to-server.
- Leave the Conversion Event Mapping defaults. Your funnel’s events reach Taboola under its own names:
Leadaslead, and the combined purchase asmake_purchase. - Copy the AnyTrack UTM Tracking Template from the Tracking section and add it to your Taboola campaign settings in the Realize platform. The click ID carries identity across domains; the UTMs credit the campaign in your reports.
- In Taboola, create your conversions: open the Conversion section, click Create, select Type: Event and Based on: Active, then pick the events AnyTrack has sent. Keep the conversion names exactly as they appear.
Step 5: Launch the Campaign Stack
Everything Taboola needs is now arriving on its own. The three campaigns below take minutes each to build, because the conversions and audiences they depend on already exist in your account.
Top of funnel: cold-reader prospecting
Keeps a stream of cold readers hitting the advertorial at native CPCs.
- Destination: the advertorial on your content domain, with the AnyTrack UTM tracking template attached in campaign settings. The template is what ties every downstream order back to this campaign in your Campaign Report.
- Budget: a daily amount you can sustain for two weeks without flinching, raised about 20% at a time for winners. Doubling overnight throws away what conversion bidding has learned.
- Audience: broad. Let conversion bidding find your readers instead of over-narrowing, and test a handful of headline variations against one strong article.
- Event tracking: optimizes on the conversions AnyTrack returns server-side; every click generates the sessions,
OutboundClick, andLeadevents that seed your funnel audiences. - Conversion objective: conversions, optimized toward the
make_purchaseconversion you created from AnyTrack’s events. While purchase volume is too thin for bidding to learn, optimize toward theleadconversion instead (your optins arrive server-side in volume), then switch tomake_purchaseonce sales accumulate.
Middle of funnel: retarget the almost-buyers
Re-engages the optins who never reached the order form.
- Destination: the advertorial again. The story is what sells, and a reader who opted in but stalled needs the argument, not a bare order form. Attach the same UTM tracking template so this campaign is credited separately in your reports.
- Audience: a Taboola custom audience built from the
leadevents AnyTrack sends, with themake_purchaseaudience excluded, so ad spend stops chasing people who already bought. - Budget: a fraction of your prospecting spend. The audience size caps what this campaign can usefully spend, so raise it only as the optin pool grows.
- Event tracking: fed by
Lead; generates themake_purchaseconversions that retire readers from this audience and reseed your buyer segment. - Conversion objective: conversions, optimized toward
make_purchase. This audience is small and already high-intent, so skip the optimization ladder and point it straight at the sale.
Scale: a second angle for a proven funnel
Once the first advertorial holds a CPA you like, the funnel can absorb more readers than one story can attract.
- Destination: a second advertorial angle on the content domain (a new hook for the same offer), with the UTM tracking template attached so the two stories compete honestly in your Campaign Report.
- Audience: broad again, with your
make_purchaseaudience set to Exclude Audience from all campaigns so buyers drop out of every campaign at once. - Budget: mirror the winning campaign’s starting level and apply the same 20% scaling steps.
- Event tracking: the same journey,
OutboundClicktoLeadto combined purchase, flowing through the same properties and enriching the same audiences. - Conversion objective:
make_purchasefrom day one if your account already has purchase volume; otherwise start it onleadlike the first campaign and graduate it the same way.
The Optimization Loop
The system you just wired improves itself on every event, not just every sale. Each optin AnyTrack sends grows the retargeting pool Taboola draws from; each combined purchase retires its buyer from every campaign through the exclusion audience and hands bidding one more example of a $174 reader rather than a $47 one. Because Sync Conversions carries each funnel order back to the advertorial property, the campaign side of the system always knows what the checkout side just learned. AnyTrack delivers those signals in real time, and Taboola works them into its bidding and audiences on its own clock, surfacing server-to-server conversions within about half an hour and attributing each one to the moment of the ad click.
Your job runs on a slower cadence, and its purpose is to hand that automatic loop better material. Once a week:
- Measure. Open the Campaign Report and read each campaign’s attributed revenue against the spend in Taboola’s dashboard. Check the Combined Order count against individual purchases in the Conversions Report, and drill into one order to see the $47 + $30 + $97 anatomy of your AOV.
- Improve. Graduate the prospecting campaign from
leadtomake_purchasewhen sales volume supports it. Kill headline variants that draw clicks but noOutboundClick, and move budget toward whichever advertorial angle holds your target CPA. - Expand. When the optin pool outgrows what retargeting can spend, raise its budget. When the buyer audience reaches a workable size, use it for the OTO sequel: an upsell campaign aimed at proven purchasers, the exact audience Taboola’s own tools let you include instead of exclude.
Neither loop waits for the other. Taboola is already spending tomorrow’s budget on what today’s orders taught it; your weekly pass just decides which lessons arrive next. A few weeks of that and the question stops being “did the ads work” and becomes “which story do I scale next”.
Wrapping Up
Here’s what you shipped:
- One journey stitched across native ad, advertorial, and ClickFunnels 2.0 funnel, with no lost hop.
- Server-side order tracking that counts every bump and OTO, thank-you page or not.
- Combined Orders teaching Taboola your real AOV instead of your front-end price.
- A three-campaign Taboola stack, each build executable straight from its task card.
Your funnel already earned this data. Now Taboola finally gets to spend it.
