Build TikTok Custom Audiences from High-Value Buyers

TikTok can find more of your best customers, but only if it knows who they are. This playbook sends full order values server-side, so you can build value-based audiences and lookalikes from the buyers who move your AOV.

Playbooks / Build TikTok Custom Audiences from High-Value Buyers

Every lookalike audience is only as good as its seed. If TikTok only sees a fraction of your purchases, or sees them without values, it builds audiences from whoever happened to get tracked: mostly window shoppers and one-time bargain hunters. Your $200 repeat customers look identical to your $12 clearance buyers.

This playbook sends every order to TikTok server-side with its full value and itemized products, so you can build value-based TikTok audiences and lookalikes from the buyers who actually drive your average order value (AOV).

Example Scenario

You run a Shopify store on TikTok traffic. Your AOV is $60, but a slice of customers spends $150 or more, and they’re the ones worth finding more of. You want every purchase reaching TikTok with its true value, so you can build a value-based audience of your biggest spenders and seed a lookalike from it.

Prerequisites Before You Begin
  • An AnyTrack account on Starter or above (the Conversion API requires a paid plan)
  • Admin access to your Shopify store, for theme code and Settings → Notifications
  • An active TikTok Ads account

Step 1: Connect Your Store

Complete the Shopify setup: the Tracking Tag in your theme, plus the five webhook notifications that collect cart and checkout events server-side. About 20 minutes, no app to install.

From then on, every order arrives in AnyTrack itemized (product IDs, names, quantities, prices) with the order total normalized and customer data hashed for matching.

Step 2: Connect TikTok Ads

Open Tracking Pixels in your AnyTrack dashboard, select TikTok, authorize your account, and toggle on the TikTok Conversion API. AnyTrack loads the TikTok Pixel for you and deduplicates browser and server events with a shared event ID, so nothing double-counts.

In TikTok Ads Manager, allow first-party cookies on the pixel and enable Automatic Advanced Matching. Both raise Event Match Quality, which decides how many of your real buyers TikTok can actually place into audiences.

One pixel, no duplicates

Remove any TikTok pixel installed by a Shopify app, theme code, or Google Tag Manager; a second pixel inflates counts in TikTok Events Manager.

Step 3: Add the UTM Template and Verify

TikTok doesn’t auto-append UTM parameters, so add AnyTrack’s pre-built template to your ads: copy it from Tracking Pixels → TikTok Pixel → Ads Integrations, paste it into each ad’s details in TikTok Ads Manager, then click Verify Ads Settings in AnyTrack. That’s what ties purchases back to campaigns in your Campaign Report, so you can see revenue and ROAS per campaign while your audiences build.

Step 4: Build Your Audiences in TikTok Events Manager

Here’s the part that saves you a whole tooling step: because AnyTrack already sends every Purchase server-side with its full order value, you don’t need to tag VIPs with a separate event. TikTok can filter on the value itself.

In TikTok Events Manager, open Audiences and build these from the events AnyTrack sends:

  • VIP buyers (value-based): a website-traffic audience of people who carried out a Purchase with value greater than your threshold, say 150. This is your best-customer seed, defined by spend, no separate event required.
  • All buyers: anyone with a Purchase event. Use it to exclude existing customers from prospecting.
  • Cart abandoners: added to cart without purchasing. Your retargeting pool.

Then seed your Lookalike from the VIP value-based audience, not from all buyers. A lookalike of people who spend $150+ hunts for a very different user than one diluted with one-time $12 orders.

Confirm values are arriving

The value filter only works because AnyTrack sends the real order value on every Purchase. Before you build the audience, confirm purchases are arriving with their values in TikTok Events Manager.

Step 5: Launch the Campaign Stack

The audiences are seeded. Two campaigns put them to work, and both are a few minutes of clicking because the events they need are already flowing.

Prospecting: hunt VIP spenders with the lookalike

Finds new customers who look like the ones who move your AOV.

  • Destination: your best-selling product page, with AnyTrack’s UTM tracking template pasted into each ad’s details (TikTok doesn’t auto-append UTMs) and Verify Ads Settings showing green.
  • Budget: a daily level you can hold steady for a week of learning, then scale in steps of 20 to 30% while CPA holds under your target. Value optimization only works if the budget gives it room to find the bigger baskets.
  • Audience: the lookalike seeded from your VIP buyers, with the all-buyers custom audience excluded so you never pay to re-acquire a customer.
  • Event tracking: optimizes on the Purchase events arriving server-side with full order values; every sale it generates feeds the buyer audiences, and every $150+ order thickens the VIP seed.
  • Conversion objective: Website Conversions, optimized for the TikTok event your Purchase mapping points to. If purchase volume is thin at launch, optimize for your mapped checkout event first (InitiateCheckout arrives from the same Shopify webhooks), then switch once sales accumulate.

Retargeting: close the cart abandoners

Converts the shoppers who chose a product and stalled.

  • Destination: the product page or cart, same per-ad UTM template, verified.
  • Budget: 10 to 15% of prospecting to start; the audience size sets the ceiling, so raise it as traffic grows.
  • Audience: the cart-abandoner custom audience (added to cart without purchasing), buyers excluded.
  • Event tracking: fed by the AddToCart events from your Shopify webhooks; generates the Purchase events that graduate shoppers out of this audience and into your seeds.
  • Conversion objective: Website Conversions, optimized for the TikTok event your Purchase mapping points to.

The Optimization Loop

You’ve built a system that gets pickier with every order. Each new sale reaches TikTok’s delivery system server-side with its true value attached, and the order sorts itself on arrival: its buyer exits the abandoner pool, joins the buyer exclusion, and, when the basket clears your threshold, becomes one more member of the VIP seed your lookalike hunts from. AnyTrack’s half of that handoff happens the moment Shopify records the sale; TikTok then absorbs each signal into bidding and audience membership on its own timetable. Steps 1 to 5 did the wiring, and now the orders do the teaching.

Your part fits in one weekly sitting:

  1. Measure. Read spend, revenue, and ROAS per campaign in the Campaign Report, then put the AOV of lookalike-driven orders next to your store average. That gap is this playbook’s scoreboard.
  2. Improve. A lookalike AOV drifting toward the store average means the seed is thinning: raise the value threshold on your VIP audience to keep it dense. Send budget to the campaigns beating your target ROAS, and cut the creatives that pull clicks but never carts.
  3. Expand. With the VIP audience comfortably above TikTok’s minimum seed size, run a wider lookalike next to the tight one, and hand winning campaigns their next 20 to 30% budget step. Every expansion produces more valued orders, which is exactly what the seeds eat.

TikTok recalibrates with every order that arrives. The weekly sitting is where you keep the definition of a VIP honest. One afternoon of wiring keeps both loops fed.

Wrapping Up

Here’s what you shipped:

  • Every Shopify order reaching TikTok server-side, itemized, valued, and deduplicated.
  • Value-based TikTok audiences that separate your best customers from the bargain hunters, no extra tooling.
  • A prospecting and retargeting stack built on real seeds, plus a weekly loop that keeps the seeds dense.

TikTok’s algorithm finds more of whatever you show it. Now you’re showing it your best customers.
