Track Affiliate Commissions Back to Your Google Ads Campaigns
The affiliate redirect is a blind spot: your commission lands in the network, and Google Ads never learns which keyword or campaign earned it. This playbook closes the loop with AutoTagged offer links and network postbacks.
The moment a visitor clicks through to your offer, you go dark. The sale happens on the merchant’s site, the commission shows up in your network dashboard, and Google Ads, which charged you for the keyword, never finds out. Its Smart Bidding keeps optimizing toward the cheapest clicks while your earnings per click (EPC) sit in a report it can’t see.
This playbook threads the AnyTrack click ID through your network’s own postback machinery, so every commission and rebill is attributed back to the Google Ads campaign and keyword that earned it, then sent to Google server-side.
The Journey of a Tracked Conversion
Follow one visitor from the Google ad click, through the offer link, to a commission attributed back to the keyword that earned it. Every signal is tracked, enriched, and sent automatically.
Steps marked with the AnyTrack node run automatically. No extra code, no manual tagging.
Example Scenario
You run Google Ads to a presell page that links out to an affiliate offer. You want Purchase events, with payout values, flowing back to Google Ads so Smart Bidding optimizes on commissions instead of clicks, and you want one report showing EPC per campaign and keyword. Three things have to happen:
- Thread the click ID from the Google ad through your presell page and onto the offer link, so a commission hours later still points back to the keyword.
- Track the network postback as a
Purchasewith its payout value, matched to that original click. - Send it to Google Ads server-side as a mapped conversion action Smart Bidding can optimize on.
- An AnyTrack account on Starter or above (the Conversion API requires a paid plan)
- An affiliate network that can fire a server-to-server conversion postback with your own subid (Impact, ClickBank, MaxBounty, Everflow, and most CPA networks can; a network that only reports inside its own dashboard cannot)
- A Google Ads account with permission to create conversion actions
- Your own presell or landing pages where you can install the Tracking Tag
Step 1: Install the Tracking Tag
Paste the Tracking Tag before </head> on your presell pages. From the moment it loads, AnyTrack AutoTags every outbound offer link on the page with a fresh click ID, carried to your network as a subid, and tracks each click as an OutboundClick event. No link editing, and no cloaking redirect in the path, so the offer link your visitor follows stays clean.
Check the subid in seconds
Hover an offer link on your presell page: the subid should already carry a click ID. If the network strips it, the sale can’t be tied back to its keyword.
Step 2: Connect Your Affiliate Network
In the AnyTrack Integration Catalog, install your network’s integration and copy the postback URL it gives you, then paste that URL into your network’s postback or server-to-server settings. AnyTrack pre-fills the subid parameters: s1 carries the click ID that matches each conversion back to the original ad. Send these values on the postback:
click_id(ass1): the AnyTrack click ID. This is the match key that ties the commission to the Google keyword.transaction_id: the network’s unique order ID, so a retried postback doesn’t double-count.payoutandcurrency: so Google Ads learns commission size, not just commission count.
Most networks have a pre-built template. If yours isn’t in the catalog, follow the Custom Affiliate Network guide to wire the same postback by hand. ClickBank users have a dedicated flow in the ClickBank integration.
Test conversions need the click ID
A network test conversion only tracks if it passes the click ID back through the subid. Plan on one real qualifying sale to confirm the loop end to end.
If your checkout sits on your own separate domain instead of the network’s, that hop needs cross-domain tracking to carry the click ID across it.
Step 3: Create Conversion Actions in Google Ads
In Google Ads, create your conversion actions under Tools & Settings → Measurement → Conversions, each with type Website and Manual Setup. Make the commission action (your Purchase) a primary conversion action so it drives bidding. If your offer has an earlier step the network posts back (a lead or opt-in), create a second action and keep it secondary for observation. How primary and secondary actions interact is covered in Google Ads Conversion Goals.
Step 4: Connect Google Ads and Map Your Events
Open Tracking Pixels in AnyTrack, select Google Ads, enter your AW- conversion ID, and complete the Google login. Turn on the Conversion API so conversions go server-side, straight from AnyTrack’s servers to Google’s, where ad blockers and browser privacy restrictions can’t touch them. Click Reload Conversions, then map Purchase (and your lead action, if any) to the conversion actions you created. The network postback matches on the AnyTrack click ID; the conversion AnyTrack sends carries the gclid collected at the ad click, so Google credits the exact campaign and keyword with no customer data required.
Then wire up campaign attribution: enable Auto-Tag in your Google Ads account settings and paste AnyTrack’s UTM tracking template into the account-level tracking template. That is what lets the Campaign Report show revenue and EPC per campaign and keyword.
Unmapped events are dropped
Conversions map only to actions of type Website created with Manual Setup. Map every event you send, then confirm delivery in the integration’s Event Log.
Trigger a test visit and watch the OutboundClick land in the Event Log. On the Google side, be patient: last-click conversions appear within about 3 hours, other attribution models take up to 15, and brand-new conversion actions can take 3 to 5 days to start displaying data.
Step 5: Launch the Campaign Stack
The postback loop is closed. Two campaigns run on it: one hunts new buyers on Search, one recovers the clicks you already paid for.
Prospecting: bid on Purchase, not clicks
Your main traffic engine, pointed at payouts instead of clicks.
- Destination: your presell page, with Google’s Auto-Tag on and AnyTrack’s UTM tracking template in the account-level tracking template, so every session carries the
gclidalongside the campaign and keyword UTMs. - Budget: hold a daily level your commission margin can carry through a learning period while the new conversion actions accumulate data (remember the 3-to-5-day lag on new actions), then shift spend toward the campaigns and keywords producing commissions, not the ones producing the cheapest clicks.
- Audience: your search keywords do the targeting. Add your offer-clicker and buyer segments as observation audiences so you can see how each keyword’s traffic moves toward a payout.
- Event tracking: optimizes on the
Purchasecommissions returned through the network postback; every visitor generates theOutboundClickevents that feed the retargeting pool below. - Conversion objective: start on Maximize Conversions toward your commission action. While payouts are too sparse for bidding to learn, set your mapped lead or opt-in action as the primary target first (it arrives earlier and more often through the same postback), then switch the primary back to the commission action once sales accumulate. Once commissions flow steadily (a common practitioner threshold is around 30 a month), move to Maximize Conversion Value so bidding chases payout size, not payout count. If your funnel returns several payouts per buyer (a bump, the main offer, an upsell), make that switch sooner, since count-based bidding overweights multi-step buyers.
Retargeting: recover the offer-clickers
The redirect blind spot used to hide these people. Now they’re an audience.
- Destination: the presell page, same account-level tracking template, so the second visit is attributed like the first.
- Budget: 10 to 15% of prospecting. The pool refills with every prospecting click, so scale the two together.
- Audience: a Google Ads Custom Audience built from
OutboundClickwithoutPurchase, 7-day window, running on Display and YouTube (and as an RLSA layer on Search). These people clicked through to the offer and stalled. - Event tracking: fed by the
OutboundClickevents AnyTrack AutoTags and tracks; generates thePurchaseevents that lift each buyer out of the audience automatically. - Conversion objective: your commission action, driving Smart Bidding on the campaigns these audiences are attached to.
Keep the value on your page
Most affiliate traffic on Google runs through a presell you own; that’s where the Tag lives, so keep your value there and let AutoTag handle the outbound link.
The Optimization Loop
The postback chain doesn’t rest between payouts. Each commission and rebill your network returns is matched to the click that earned it and sent straight into Google’s bidding models with the payout value attached, which is how Smart Bidding stops hunting the cheapest click and starts learning which searcher ends in a commission. The buyer behind each payout falls out of your retargeting pool and into the purchaser signal on the same event. AnyTrack’s matching happens as each postback lands; Google then feeds the conversion into bidding and audiences on its own cycle (about 3 hours for last-click, up to 15 for other models). Not one step of it involves a spreadsheet upload or an offline conversion import.
Once a week, sit down with the numbers your network never gave you:
- Measure. EPC, revenue, and ROAS per campaign and per keyword in the Campaign Report, every payout per click rolled in, bumps and rebills included, with the network integration’s Event Log as your proof that each commission arrived. No network dashboard has ever tied a payout to a keyword; this report does.
- Improve. Keywords that produce commissions take budget from keywords that merely produce clicks, and search terms with plenty of
OutboundClickbut noPurchaseget paused. As payouts accumulate, climb the ladder: the campaign that learned on your lead action graduates to the commission action, then to Maximize Conversion Value. Rein in the retargeting window when frequency runs hot. - Expand. A presell page with proven EPC earns a second keyword theme or angle. And when the buyer audience grows past exclusion duty, use it as a seed signal for a Search campaign on your best offer, with the offer-clickers (
OutboundClickminusPurchase) split out as their own warm retargeting tier.
Google sharpens its bids on every payout that comes home. Your Monday pass turns the same report into a sharper keyword list. The postbacks feeding both were configured once, and they haven’t needed you since.
Wrapping Up
Here’s what you shipped:
- Offer links AutoTagged with the click ID, carried to your network as a SubID, so the redirect blind spot no longer breaks attribution.
- Network commissions and rebills tracked through postbacks, matched to the original click by its
gclid, and sent to Google Ads server-side. - A Search and retargeting stack bidding on commissions, plus a weekly loop that keeps budget on the keywords that pay out.
The next time you wonder which keyword actually earns, the Conversions column answers for you, in payouts, not clicks.
