Turn Taboola Traffic Into Google Ads Audiences
Native traffic is cheap but readers leave without buying. Stream every offer click and posted-back sale into GA4 audiences Google Ads can retarget.
Taboola sends you readers at a fraction of what Google charges for the same attention. The catch: most of them aren’t ready to buy, and once they leave, they’re gone. Your Google Ads campaigns can’t retarget visitors Google never learned about, so the intent you paid Taboola to generate quietly expires.
This playbook closes that gap. AnyTrack tracks what every Taboola reader does on your site, records the sales GiddyUp posts back from the merchant’s page, and streams the enriched events server-side into Google Analytics 4 as audiences your linked Google Ads account can target, bid on, and exclude.
The Journey of a Tracked Conversion
Follow one reader from the native ad click to a Google Ads audience. Every intent signal is tracked, enriched, and streamed automatically.
Steps marked with the AnyTrack node run automatically. No extra code, no manual tagging.
Example Scenario
You promote GiddyUp offers with Taboola native campaigns pointed at your advertorial and review pages. You want the readers who showed real intent (clicked through to the offer, started its checkout) collected into GA4 audiences, so Google Ads can retarget warm prospects across Search, YouTube, and Display, and stop showing prospecting ads to people who already bought.
- An AnyTrack account on Personal or above (the Taboola server-side integration requires it)
- An active Taboola account and a Google Analytics 4 property
- A Google Ads account linked to your Google Analytics 4 property
- Access to your site's head section to install the Tracking Tag
- An active GiddyUp affiliate account, with access to its postback settings
Step 1: Install the Tracking Tag
Paste the Tracking Tag before </head> on your landing pages. It collects sessions, page views, form submissions, and outbound clicks out of the box, each one tied to a first-party click ID and the UTM parameters the visitor arrived with.
Step 2: Connect GiddyUp
The Tag covers the top of the funnel; GiddyUp supplies the bottom. Your sales close on the merchant’s page, where the Tag can’t see them, so the postback brings them home:
- Install GiddyUp from the Integration Catalog and copy the postback URL it generates.
- In your GiddyUp affiliate dashboard, open the postback settings and add a new postback: Status Active, Type Conversion, Postback Level Global, Delivery Method Postback.
- Paste the postback URL exactly as provided and save.
AnyTrack marks the integration verified when the first conversion lands. Your side of the link needs nothing: AutoTag appends the AnyTrack click ID to every GiddyUp offer link on your pages as sub5, the parameter GiddyUp expects, and that ID is what matches each sale back to the Taboola click that started it. Confirm the IDs are flowing in GiddyUp’s Reports → Sub5 Report.
Post back the funnel, not just the sale
GiddyUp runs on EverFlow, so it can post back ViewContent, AddToCart, and InitiateCheckout too: duplicate the postback URL, set its event_name to the event, and add one postback per event. These signals fill the audiences in Step 5 between sales.
Step 3: Connect Taboola
- Open Tracking Pixels in your AnyTrack dashboard and select Taboola.
- Add your Taboola Pixel ID and toggle Server-Side Events.
- Copy the pre-built UTM tracking template from Tracking Pixels → Taboola Pixel → Ads Integrations and add it to every Taboola campaign.
AnyTrack loads the Taboola pixel for you, sends engagement events client-side, and returns conversions server-to-server so Taboola’s bidding learns from real outcomes too.
The template is the step everything else depends on: utm_source=taboola is what identifies this traffic in GA4, so your audiences can key off it.
Step 4: Connect Google Analytics 4
Follow the Google Analytics 4 setup to connect your GA4 property from the Integration Catalog and map the events you want to send. AnyTrack streams conversions server-side through the Measurement Protocol, enriched with attribution data, UTM sources, and campaign IDs before they leave.
This complements your existing GA4 tag rather than replacing it. The difference shows up where browser tracking fails: ad blockers and privacy restrictions can’t stop a server-side stream, so the readers who’d otherwise vanish still land in your reports and audiences. It also hands you an instant check on Step 2: open GA4’s Debug View while you test, and you can watch the offer clicks and posted-back conversions arrive in real time.
Step 5: Build the Audiences in GA4
In GA4, open Admin → Audiences and create audiences that combine the traffic source with an intent event. Three that earn their keep:
- Engaged readers: session source is
taboola, plus anOutboundClickevent. Everyone who cared enough to click through to the offer: your warm pool. - Offer abandoners: session source is
taboola, plusInitiateCheckoutbut noPurchase. Fed by the funnel postbacks from Step 2, and the highest-intent slice you have. - Buyers: anyone with a
Purchaseevent. Build it for exclusions, so prospecting budgets stop paying to re-win them.
Create audiences before you scale
GA4 audiences fill going forward from creation. Set them up before scaling Taboola, and give them a day or two to accumulate members.
Step 6: Launch the Campaign Stack
With your GA4 property linked to Google Ads, the audiences appear in your Google Ads shared library automatically. To close the loop completely, also connect Google Ads under Tracking Pixels and map your conversion actions. AnyTrack then sends every GiddyUp conversion server-side to Google Ads with its real payout, so Smart Bidding learns from the same clean signals your audiences are built on.
Then the stack is two campaigns: one fills the audiences, one converts them.
Top of funnel: Taboola fills the pool
Buys attention at native prices and turns it into audience members.
- Destination: your content and offer pages, with AnyTrack’s pre-built UTM tracking template on every campaign.
utm_source=taboolais what your GA4 audiences key off, so no template means empty audiences. - Budget: a daily level you can hold for a week or two while the audiences accumulate, scaled in steps of about 20% once the retargeting layer is converting the intent it produces.
- Audience: broad native targeting. This campaign’s job is reach into readers who behave; the GA4 audience definitions do the qualifying downstream.
- Event tracking: generates the
OutboundClickevents and, through GiddyUp’s postbacks, theInitiateCheckoutandPurchaseevents that fill your three GA4 audiences; optimizes on the conversions AnyTrack returns to Taboola server-side. - Conversion objective: the purchase conversion you created in Taboola from the events AnyTrack sends. While sales volume builds, create it on
start_checkout, fed by the InitiateCheckout postback, then switch tomake_purchaseonce sales support it.
Retargeting: Google closes the readers
Converts proven intent across Search, YouTube, and Display.
- Destination: your offer page, with Google’s auto-tagging enabled and AnyTrack’s UTM tracking template in the account-level tracking template.
- Budget: start at 10 to 20% of your Taboola spend. The audiences cap what this can usefully spend, so scale it with their size, not ahead of it.
- Audience: the engaged-readers audience as targeting, the offer-abandoners audience with a bid premium (they’re your closest-to-buying slice), and the buyers audience as an exclusion here and on every prospecting campaign you run.
- Event tracking: fed by the GA4 audiences your Taboola traffic fills; generates the
Purchaseconversions that AnyTrack sends back to Google server-side with their GiddyUp payouts. - Conversion objective: your mapped purchase conversion action, driving Smart Bidding on the campaigns these audiences are attached to.
The Optimization Loop
Somewhere in your pools, membership just changed. Every intent event a Taboola reader triggers streams server-side into GA4 and re-sorts the three audiences you built: read and click through to the offer, and they surface among the engaged readers; stall at its checkout, and they move up to offer abandoners; buy, and they vanish from retargeting into the exclusion list. AnyTrack sends the same conversions to Google and to Taboola, so both bidding systems study an identical picture of what a real buyer looks like. The stream itself is immediate, and each platform pulls it in at its own rhythm (Taboola surfaces server-side conversions within 30 to 45 minutes, while GA4 audiences refresh as sessions land, typically within about 24 hours). Watched or unwatched, the sorting never stops.
You step in once a week:
- Measure. GA4 audience sizes first: are the pools growing? Then the Campaign Report, reading revenue per Taboola campaign next to the conversions your Google retargeting produces. Taboola’s spend stays in its own dashboard; the revenue side of the story lives here.
- Improve. Taboola budget belongs with the campaigns that fill the pools with readers who go on to convert, not the ones that merely deliver the cheapest clicks. Widen the engaged-readers window when the pool runs thin; shorten the offer-abandoner window when Google’s frequency runs hot.
- Expand. Pools holding steady earn a wider net: extend the retargeting to YouTube if you started on Search and Display, and once the buyers audience outgrows exclusion duty, make it the seed signal for a Performance Max test funded by the very Taboola campaigns that filled it.
The sorting sharpens reader by reader without your help. What it can’t do is choose where readers come from: that’s your weekly pass. Keep both going and cheap native attention keeps turning into Google conversions.
Wrapping Up
Here’s what you shipped:
- Every Taboola reader tracked first-party, every GiddyUp sale posted back and tied to the campaign that brought it.
- Enriched events streaming server-side into GA4, immune to the ad blockers that eat browser tags.
- A Taboola-to-Google campaign stack: native traffic filling audiences of proven intent, retargeting closing them, buyers excluded everywhere.
- A weekly loop that reads one report and keeps budget on the campaigns that convert.
Taboola finds the readers. Google closes them. AnyTrack is the wiring in between.
